Dr. Martin Crots
Martin Crots is a general surgeon with a subspeciality in Surgical Gastroenterology. This means that he is specialised not only as a surgeon but also a gastroenterologist, hepato-biliary sugeon, colo-rectal surgeon and proctologist. He is one of the very few sugeons in South Africa and globally who holds all these specialities and is registered to practice each as a sub-speciality.
He obtained his MBChB from University of the Free State in 2002, cum laude for surgery and was awarded the prostegious Cornelius Wessels medal as the best student in surgery.
After completing his internship and community service in Kimberley Hospital under the tutorship of the excellent Prof Ettienne Theron, he started specialising in surgery and ontained his MMed Surgery degree in 2009.
He started working as a specialist consultant at Universitas Academic Hospital at University of the Free State completing his subspeciality in Gastroenterology in 2011. Done under the mentorship of Dr Stephan Grobler (colo-rectal and proctology), Professor Renald Barry and Dr Casper Troskie(Upper gastroenterology and hepato-biliary). He moved down to Cape Town and started a private practice at Mediclinic Cape Town at the start of 2013
He has since grown a busy practice and has managed to maintain a reputation of not only world-class surgical procedures but also being kind and caring. He is married, has 3 children, 2 dogs and lives in Oranjezicht in Cape Town.
His hobbies are reading and travel and collecting plots and characters for his future novel.
His personal interests in surgery include:
Endoscopy (ERCP and endoscopic interventions), pelvic floor surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery (colo-rectal).
Martin is passionate about his patients and guarantees an open and available relationship with them. He wants to provide a “homey” and comfortable environment in conjunction with modern equipment and updated clinical guidelines to ensure optimal outcomes.
Pre and post operative care are a priority focussing on comfort and early recovery.
Dr. Gareth Chilton
Gareth Chilton obtained his MBChB undergraduate degree in Pretoria in 2009. He then completed internship training at the Pietermaritzburg Hospital Complex in KZN and went on to Community Service at Vredenburg Hospital. After working around the Cape Town Metropole in general surgery as a medical officer, gaining invaluable experience from top cape town surgeons, he obtained his FCS surgical speciality at Groote Schuur Hospital through the University of Cape Town in 2020 and his MMed in general surgery in 2021.
He has worked as a consultant general surgeon at Groote Schuur and Worcester Provincial Hospital and was very excited to join the Mediclinic family and Martin Crots in 2022.
He is a caring and humble surgeon with a good work ethic who enjoys building relationships with his colleagues and patients. He aims to provide the best surgical service possible, and prides himself on being aware of his patient’s needs in theatre and throughout. His pre and post operative care is of utmost importance to him as well as being available for his patients during and after their surgical journey.
He is passionate about general surgery and perfecting surgical technique for a comfortable, caring and world class experience for his patients. His surgical interest includes but is not limited to laparoscopic abdominal surgery (including gallbladder and bowel surgery), hernia surgery, endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) and endoscopic interventions as well as breast, soft tissue and endocrine surgery.
